Proactive Preparations Urged by Proteas Women in Anticipation of Sri Lanka Series

Ahead of the highly anticipated T20 International (T20I) series between South Africa and Sri Lanka, the women's Proteas team is gearing up for a robust performance as they kick off their pre-tour camp in Johannesburg. In an interview during their first training session at the Redhill School in Sandton, top-order batter Sune Luus expressed her optimism for a successful end to the season with a couple of series victories. Recognising the talent of the Sri Lankan squad, Luus acknowledged their spin-dominant approach, which poses an intriguing challenge for South Africa.

One area of concern for Luus is the recent lack of runs from Sri Lankan player Chamari Athapaththu in the WPL. Given the spin-friendly nature of the grounds they will be playing on, Luus expects a challenging but ultimately rewarding contest. Drawing a parallel to their previous series against Bangladesh, Luus highlighted the excitement surrounding the inclusion of new players in the Proteas squad.

Head coach Hilton Moreeng stressed the importance of thorough preparation in the days leading up to the first T20I in Benoni on March 27. Having experienced slow starts to tours in the past, Moreeng emphasised the need to avoid playing catch-up cricket. He emphasised the significance of maintaining focus from the very first ball, pointing out that both teams are well acquainted with each other's playing styles, leaving little room for surprises. Luus echoed her coach's sentiments, emphasising the team's objective to start and end the series strongly, capitalising on the momentum from the first game.

In a remarkable career that spans nearly 14 years, Luus is on the verge of becoming the most-capped T20I Proteas women's player, surpassing the record held by former captain Mignon du Preez with 114 caps for South Africa. Reflecting on this achievement, Luus expressed her astonishment and gratitude, considering it a tremendous honour to represent her country on such a significant scale. She eagerly anticipates the support of her family as she reaches this milestone.
