According to a recent report, the Mumbai Cricket Association is in the midst of planning a new cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 100,000 people, located 68 kilometres away from the famous Wankhede Stadium.
The news of this project has caused quite a buzz in the Indian cricketing community, as the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) is considering building a cutting-edge stadium in the Amane village of Thane district. The proposed stadium will span approximately 50 acres of land and will be able to accommodate 100,000 spectators.
Insiders revealed that the MCA has put in a bid to acquire the land through an open tender circulated by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The approval from the Maharashtra government is currently awaiting.
This stadium was a vision of MCA president Amol Kale, who tragically passed away in June. The new stadium will feature modern facilities and two grounds for hosting first-class matches.
Interestingly, the concept for the stadium was put forward during a ceremony honouring the T20 World Cup 2024-winning team at the Vidhan Sabha, where the Maharashtra government recognised four players, including captain Rohit Sharma. The initiative received backing from Deputy Chief Minister and a close associate of Kale, Eknath Shinde.
This announcement comes shortly after Wankhede Stadium held an event to celebrate the successful Indian team, emphasising the need for a larger stadium in the area.
