Afridi's innings was short-lived
Shahid Afridi, the former captain of Pakistan, received a warm reception from the crowd as he walked out to bat in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) match against India at Edgbaston. The 22,000 spectators in the stadium chanted "Afridi Afridi" as he entered the crease. However, Afridi's innings was short-lived as he was dismissed for a golden duck by Dhawal Kulkarni in the 18th over.
Pakistan champions were put in to bat by the India champions, and openers Sharjeel Khan and Kamran Akmal put up a solid partnership of 145 runs. Sohaib Maqsood also contributed a quick 50 to help Pakistan reach a total of 243/4 in 20 overs. Despite the strong batting performance, Afridi's early dismissal caused a buzz on social media.
The hashtag #AfridiDuck trended on social media as fans and critics reacted to his quick exit. The World Championship of Legends, sanctioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), started on July 3 and will continue until July 18. Both India and Pakistan had been undefeated in the tournament before this match.
Players from both teams expressed their excitement and determination before the game. Suresh Raina from India mentioned the honour of playing against Pakistan, while Younis Khan from Pakistan emphasised the pride and passion they have for the game.
Despite the anticipation and enthusiasm surrounding the match, Afridi's dismissal took the spotlight away from the otherwise strong performance by the Pakistan team.
