South Africa has announced the inclusion of Jason Smith, Nqaba Peter, and Amdile Simelane in their squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan and Ireland in the UAE. The team is set to play three ODIs against Afghanistan, starting on September 18 in Sharjah, followed by two T20Is and another three ODIs against Ireland beginning September 27 in Abu Dhabi.
Both legspinner Nqaba Peter and all-rounder Jason Smith made their T20I debuts earlier this year, with Peter achieving his debut in May and Smith in August 2024. Peter has participated in two matches, taking three wickets, while Smith has played just one game, scoring six runs.
Amdile Simelane receives his first international call-up at the age of 21, having been recognized for his potential during the recent South Africa Emerging Tour to Zimbabwe in August. He also played for South Africa A against Sri Lanka A in a one-day series.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has recovered from a right calf injury and has been included in all three squads after missing the T20I series against the West Indies in August.
Head coach Rob Walter emphasized that these tours provide an excellent opportunity for young and fringe players to gain valuable international experience. He noted that the selection of younger talent is part of a strategy to expand the player pool in preparation for major upcoming ICC tournaments, including the home World Cup in 2027.
"We're focused on giving chances to emerging talents and players who have shown promise recently," Walter said. "This decision aligns with our objective of building a broader squad ahead of significant ICC events over the next 18 months, especially the 50-over World Cup in 2027. Tours like these give our players a unique chance to experience international conditions that differ from their usual environment."
The South African team will depart for the UAE on September 14.
