Alex Davies Breaks 1,000-Run Barrier in Division One

During a rain-impacted second day at New Road, Warwickshire captain Alex Davies made history by becoming the first player to exceed 1,000 runs in Division One of the Vitality County Championship this season. Warwickshire currently stands at 112 for 4, trailing Worcestershire's total of 307 by 195 runs.

Entering his innings requiring just 34 runs to reach the milestone, the 30-year-old Davies accomplished this with flair, striking a boundary off Logan van Beek in the morning session. His closest competitor, Rory Burns of Surrey, was dismissed for 21 in a match against Somerset, leaving him with a total of 974 runs.

This marks the second time Davies has achieved the 1,000-run milestone in a single season. He first accomplished this feat in 2017, making him the first wicket-keeper from Lancashire to do so. After moving to Warwickshire in 2022, his first two seasons were less fruitful, but he has made a remarkable comeback this summer, scoring four centuries with an impressive average of 56.88.

Davies’s innings concluded when he was bowled by Ethan Brookes for 58 runs. Brookes had an effective nine-over spell, claiming two wickets before rain and bad light interrupted play at 2:15 PM, allowing for only 37 overs to be bowled.

Earlier in the day, Warwickshire quickly finished off Worcestershire's first innings, although Worcestershire managed to secure a second batting point. Chris Rushworth picked up two early wickets, but Tom Taylor remained unbeaten on 36 runs and later made the first breakthrough with the new ball, dismissing Rob Yates for a duck.

Davies charmed the crowd with his aggressive approach, reaching his half-century in just 59 balls. Unfortunately, after lunch, Brookes struck again, taking out both Will Rhodes and Davies, while van Beek also claimed his first wicket by bowling Sam Hain for 11.

Despite the rain delays, fans who remained until the end were treated to a light-hearted mix of weather-themed songs over the PA system, including "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "It’s Raining Men."
