Ashwin and Gambhir Gear Up for Test

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has praised his relationship with Gautam Gambhir as they prepare to collaborate for the first time in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh scheduled for September. The cricketer from Tamil Nadu expressed admiration for Gambhir, who recently took on the role of head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team.

Gambhir succeeded Rahul Dravid as head coach following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup. His initial assignment resulted in a T20I series win, although the team faced an unexpected ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka. With 10 Tests left in the current World Test Championship cycle, Gambhir has considerable challenges ahead.

"Gautam is someone I have a strong rapport with because he is both straightforward and honest. He’s a hero of Indian cricket, and we should always support him," Ashwin told PTI.

Ashwin's performance will be pivotal during India’s Test season, especially as he aims to challenge the visiting batsmen. India's itinerary includes a two-Test series and three T20Is against Bangladesh in September-October, followed by a three-Test series against New Zealand starting on October 16. The season will then culminate with an unprecedented five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia from November to January, where Ashwin aspires to secure a place in the playing XI.

Having participated in 66 matches, including 16 Tests alongside Gambhir, Ashwin highlighted their positive working relationship. Gambhir has consistently commended Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket over the years.

Reflecting on his recent achievement of leading the Dindigul Dragons to victory in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, Ashwin discussed the importance of young players finding motivation to play at the national level.

“I’m pleased to see many young cricketers earning well and improving their families’ circumstances. It’s wonderful for Indian cricket,” Ashwin stated. “Nevertheless, it’s essential to create incentives for these young talents to aim for a spot on the national team, which depends on the stakeholders and decision-makers.”
