Temba Bavuma supports the fight against breast cancer

On Monday, Temba Bavuma, the Proteas Test captain, visited the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

He witnessed the hospital's ongoing efforts to fight breast cancer and the Pink ODI Fund's invaluable contribution.

Bavuma was hosted by the hospital's Breast Cancer Clinic which provides specialised breast cancer services to hospitals and health clinics in Gauteng, and which has benefited from the Fund since 2018.

The clinic diagnoses over 350 new cases of breast cancer annually and treats up to 100 patients per week.

A significant portion of the money pledged by the public during the popular Pink ODIs at the Wanderers goes to The Pink ODI Fund. To date, the fund has approved R2.4 million for research and ward upgrades and has paid out almost R700,000 for various projects. Additionally, it continues to provide refreshments for day patients at the breast clinic.

The Proteas first began wearing pink to raise awareness of breast cancer in 2013 and hosted 12 Pink ODIs, including two in 2023.

The Pink ODI Fund is a not-for-profit organisation set up to manage the significant donations made by supporters and support nominated recipients who provide breast cancer healthcare services.
