BCCI selectors chose to prioritise Mohammed Shami's long-term health

The cautious approach taken by the BCCI selectors regarding Mohammed Shami's inclusion in the Duleep Trophy squad showcases a strategic long-term perspective on player management. Despite earlier indications from BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar about the potential for Shami's return for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, his recent absence from the Duleep Trophy team has sparked discussion.

Shami's journey to recovery began after he sustained an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup held in November 2023. Following surgery in the UK in February 2024, he has been rehabilitated at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. His recent social media posts showing him bowling, albeit at a lower intensity, fueled speculation about his readiness for the Duleep Trophy, which is set to commence on September 5. However, the selectors ultimately chose to prioritise Shami's long-term health over a rushed comeback, as he was deemed not fit enough to participate.

Although Agarkar hinted that Shami is still a possibility for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting on September 19, the focus remains on ensuring that he is fully fit for the vital five-Test series against Australia later in the year. Shami's impressive Test record, which includes 229 wickets from 64 matches and six five-wicket hauls, underscores his value to the team.

Instead of pushing Shami to return prematurely, the selectors are paving the way for a gradual reintegration. He is expected to make his return through Bengal's Ranji Trophy fixtures in October before being considered for the three Tests against New Zealand. This prudent decision not only reflects the selectors' foresight but also their commitment to maintaining the team's core strength and resilience for significant competitions in the future.
