BCCI will get information from NCA about Mohammed Shami's condition

India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami is making steady progress in his recovery from the ankle injury that has kept him out since the ODI World Cup last November. However, his availability for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia remains uncertain. BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated that the final decision on Shami’s participation will be based on the report from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Shami resumed bowling last month after undergoing surgery and has gradually increased his workload without any signs of discomfort. The target for his return is India’s home Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 in Chennai. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar previously indicated that this series is the likely timeline for Shami’s comeback, though his fitness assessment from the NCA will be the determining factor.

Shami has an impressive record in Australia, with 31 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 32.16, including two five-wicket hauls. His experience could be vital for India as they gear up for the crucial series Down Under later this year.

In other news, Jay Shah confirmed that VVS Laxman will continue as the head of the NCA. Laxman’s contract, which began in December 2021, is set to expire in September 2024, but the BCCI is reportedly pleased with his performance and plans to extend his tenure further.
