Brown and Sutherland have been named in the MRA squad for the Top End T20
Josh Brown and Will Sutherland have been named in the Melbourne Renegades Academy squad for the Top End T20 series in Darwin, while Australian fast bowler Scott Boland will join the Melbourne Stars Academy.
Sutherland, who made his ODI debut against the West Indies last season, will captain the Renegades. He has spent the winter recovering from a stress fracture in his back, which led to him missing a second consecutive stint with Somerset in county cricket.
Brown, a major off-season acquisition for the Renegades, previously dazzled with the Brisbane Heat, including a remarkable 140 off 57 balls against the Adelaide Strikers last season. Although the highly anticipated partnership with Jake Fraser-McGurk will have to wait until the BBL in December, the Top End T20 series will be Brown's first appearance with his new club.
The Renegades Academy squad also includes Kane Richardson and Victoria opener Marcus Harris, who currently does not have a BBL contract. Harris made a single appearance for the Perth Scorchers last season, filling in as a late replacement in the Eliminator final.
Boland, who has been named in the Stars Academy squad, will also take on the role of a bowling coach for the tournament. If he plays, it will be his first competitive cricket since April, when a heel injury cut short his county stint with Durham.
The Stars Academy squad also features experienced player Hilton Cartwright.
The Top End T20 series will include the Melbourne Stars and Renegades Academies, alongside Northern Territory Strike, Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers, Tasmania, ACT Comets, Pakistan A, and a Bangladesh High-Performance side.
