Chameera Is Injured And Has Been Sidelined From The White-Ball Series
Sri Lanka Cricket has encountered a significant blow as fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has been sidelined from the forthcoming white-ball series against India due to bronchitis and a respiratory infection. Asitha Fernando has been named as his replacement for the three T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals set to take place against India.
"Only yesterday did we receive the reports, and it can be confirmed that he will miss the T20s and ODIs against India," stated Upul Tharanga, Sri Lanka's Chief Selector, at a press conference on Wednesday.
Asitha Fernando, who shone in the recently completed Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, will take over for Chameera. While playing for the Jaffna Kings, Fernando achieved figures of 3/35 in the final, contributing to his team's victory for a fourth title against the Galle Marvels. Over the course of the LPL, the 26-year-old claimed 10 wickets in 10 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 9.61.
Typically utilised in the red-ball format, Fernando will seek to establish his presence in Sri Lanka's white-ball squad. Despite having various options in both pace and spin bowling, Sri Lanka faces a daunting task against an Indian team that has dominated all formats over the past 18 months.
In addition, Sri Lanka is entering a new phase of leadership, with Charith Asalanka appointed as the new captain for T20Is following Wanindu Hasaranga's recent resignation.
As the team gears up for the series against India, Fernando's inclusion will be crucial as they strive to deliver a strong performance against a formidable opponent.
