John Stephenson, the current chief executive of Essex, will transition to a similar position with Western Australia Cricket after the conclusion of the season. This move was confirmed earlier this month, with the 59-year-old stepping down from his role at Chelmsford, which he has held since the fall of 2021, to explore new opportunities.
Stephenson has a rich history in cricket, having played for both Essex and Hampshire, and earning a Test cap for England. Before his tenure at Essex, he was associated with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Speaking to the WA Cricket website, Stephenson highlighted his commitment to community engagement and expanding the sport within the state. He emphasised the importance of continuing the on-field success of Western Australia Cricket, particularly in developing more players for the Australian national team, and fostering a strong connection between the sport and the community. He expressed his enjoyment in engaging with members, a key aspect of his roles at both MCC and Essex, and stated that he aims to strengthen the relationship between WA Cricket, the WACA Ground, and the broader Western Australian community.
Stephenson's appointment came after a global search for the ideal candidate to lead the organisation.
