Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs propelled South Africa to a dominant 307-2 at the close of day one in the second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Both batsmen celebrated their maiden Test centuries, contributing a 201-run stand for the second wicket on a favourable batting track, as the Proteas aim to clinch the series.
De Zorzi, unbeaten on 141 with 10 fours and three sixes, will continue his innings alongside David Bedingham, who finished on 18*. Stubbs scored a measured 106, reaching his century off 194 balls before being bowled by Taijul Islam, who earlier dismissed Aiden Markram for 33.
Despite aggressive appeals, Bangladesh had limited success, burning two of their three reviews. South Africa, making two changes, introduced all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy and fast bowler Dane Paterson. Bangladesh, in turn, made three adjustments, including debutants Zakir Hasan, Nahid Rana, and Mahidul Islam Ankon after Jaker Ali’s concussion.
Having lost the opening Test within four days with a dominant Kagiso Rabada performance, Bangladesh now faces an uphill battle at a venue where they have won only twice in 24 Tests. South Africa’s commanding start puts them in a strong position as they seek a series sweep.
