England Women’s Team Suffers Major Setback
England’s cricket team has faced a significant setback ahead of their South Africa tour, with star all-rounder Paige Scholfield ruled out due to an ankle injury. The mishap occurred during a training session on Tuesday, and further evaluation on Wednesday confirmed that Scholfield would be unable to participate in the three-match T20I series. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that the 27-year-old has returned to the UK for rehabilitation.
"Paige Scholfield has been withdrawn from the England Women T20 squad to tour South Africa after suffering an ankle injury," England Cricket posted on 'X'.
Scholfield’s inclusion in the squad had raised eyebrows, as she was selected over Alice Capsey following England's early exit from the T20 World Cup in October. Debuting internationally against Ireland in September, Scholfield had also represented the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, showcasing her all-round skills. However, her untimely injury has paved the way for Capsey’s return, which comes at a crucial moment. Recalled earlier this week to address injury concerns within the squad, Capsey is now set to strengthen England's lineup as they prepare for the first T20I in East London on Sunday.
The South Africa tour is seen as a pivotal chance for England to rebound from their World Cup disappointment. The series will feature three T20Is, followed by a trio of ODIs and a concluding four-day Test match. After the initial T20I on November 26, the action moves to Benoni on November 27 and Centurion on November 30.
The ODI series kicks off with a day-night clash in Kimberley on December 4, with subsequent matches in Durban and Potchefstroom on December 8 and 11, respectively. The tour wraps up with a four-day Test starting December 15 in Bloemfontein, giving both teams an opportunity to finish on a high note.
With Scholfield sidelined, all eyes will be on Alice Capsey and the rest of the squad to deliver strong performances as England looks to turn the page on their recent setbacks.
