From the 50-over format to Champions Trophy 2025 for Australia
Australian batsman David Warner had previously retired from the 50-over format after Australia's World Cup win last year. He played his final Test against Pakistan earlier this year and confirmed that the recent T20 World Cup would be his last appearance for the national team. However, in a recent Instagram post, Warner teased a possible comeback for the 2025 Champions Trophy if chosen.
This Instagram post was Warner's first since the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he had reiterated his retirement from international cricket. Despite this, Warner left the door open for a return to represent Australia in the Champions Trophy. "I will continue to play franchise cricket and am open to playing for Australia in the Champions Trophy if selected,"
Looking back on his career and thanking fans and teammates, Warner said, "I hope I have entertained you and changed cricket, especially in Test matches, by scoring quickly." He thanked his colleagues and support staff, joking about the end of his constant WhatsApp messages and voice memos. Warner praised the team's recent achievements and expressed confidence in the leadership of Pat Cummins, Andrew McDonald, and the coaching staff.
Warner had a successful career with Australia, playing 383 matches across formats and scoring 18,995 runs. He played crucial roles in Australia's victories in two ODI World Cups, a T20 World Cup, and a World Test Championship.
Although Warner has retired from international cricket, a potential comeback for the 2025 Champions Trophy leaves hope for Australian fans to see him back in the green and gold jersey, showcasing his batting skills once again.
