The 2024/25 T20 Knockout competition kicks off on Saturday, 21 September, and all eyes are on the defending champions, Limpopo Impalas, who claimed the title last season with a series of commanding performances. This year, the Impalas are determined to defend their crown with even greater intensity as they face ACDC Express Tuskers in their opening match in Polokwane.
Last season, the Impalas entered the competition as underdogs but impressed with their team cohesion, smart strategies, and fearless cricket, culminating in their championship victory. A key player in their triumph was Don Radebe, the Division 2 T20 Knockout Player of the Tournament. His standout moments, including a crucial hat-trick against Northern Cape Heat, played a significant role in their success.
Reflecting on last year’s victory, Radebe shared, "Being the underdogs gave us the drive to prove ourselves. We believed in each other, and everyone knew their role." As the reigning champions, the Impalas know they’ll face tougher competition this season. "We understand teams will come at us harder, but we’ve improved. We’ve worked on areas we lacked last season, and we’re ready to play even better this time," Radebe added.
Radebe, a Limpopo native, embodies the heart and spirit of the Impalas. His journey from street cricket to professional success motivates not only himself, but young cricketers across the province. "I play for more than just myself—I represent every young boy in Limpopo who dreams of playing at the highest level," he said.
Radebe's ambitions stretch beyond personal achievements. He aims to play for South Africa and compete in the prestigious Betway SA20 tournament, while also aspiring to lead the Impalas to Division 1 cricket next season. "My goal is to see the Impalas in Division 1, and I’m working towards that," he stated, emphasising the importance of elevating his team.
The Impalas’ team unity remains a crucial factor in their success, strengthened by the emergence of young talent eager to make their mark in professional cricket. An exciting storyline this season is their upcoming match against their former captain, who has since joined Northern Cape Heat. "It’s going to be thrilling to play against him," Radebe noted.
The Impalas are calling on fans from Limpopo and beyond to rally behind them as they defend their title. With every match, the team aims to inspire their supporters and demonstrate that with belief, resilience, and unity, anything is possible.
