India hosts South Africa in multi-format women's tour June-July

India will host South Africa in a multi-format women's tour in June-July. ESPNcricinfo understands that Bengaluru will host the white-ball leg, starting with three ODIs from 16 June, while Chennai will host the one-off Test from 28 June.

The three T20Is will be played after the Test to ensure continuity of formats ahead of the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in September-October. The ODIs will be played on 16, 19 and 23 June, while the T20Is will be played on 5, 7 and 9 July.

The six white-ball matches are part of the ICC Women's FTP. Both series, along with a visit from New Zealand, were due to be played between July and September last year but were postponed due to the men's ODI World Cup and logistics.

The one-off Test wasn't part of the FTP. It was a late addition as part of the CSA and BCCI's recent push to promote women's Tests.

Having played England and Australia in December, this will be the third Test India has played in seven months. Those two Tests followed the BCCI's announcement of equal match fees for centrally contracted male and female cricketers, a significant development aimed at taking the "first step towards tackling discrimination".

Meanwhile, South Africa, who broke an eight-year hiatus from the format when they played in England in June 2022, last played a four-day match in Perth in February, where they lost by an innings and 284 runs to Australia.

The tour is also a significant step in the BCCI's aim to take women's cricket to newer centres. In recent years, the BCCI has preferred to host teams at different venues in Mumbai for logistical reasons. They broke away from this norm with the WPL earlier this year, with matches held in Bengaluru and Delhi.

The three ODIs are part of the ICC Women's Championship, which sees the top four teams, excluding the hosts, qualify directly for the 2025 ODI World Cup in India. South Africa are currently second in the standings.
