Despite an impressive display in his recent one-day international match, Sanju Samson was excluded from India's ODI series against Sri Lanka, leading to a flurry of discussions among fans and analysts regarding his undeniable talent and potential.
Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa shared his candid thoughts on this development, noting that this isn't the first time Samson has encountered such challenges, nor is it likely to be the last. He emphasised the unpredictable nature of team selections, particularly with changes in leadership, and encouraged fans to exercise patience.
"From Sanju's perspective, this isn't the first instance he's faced this kind of situation. I doubt it will be the last time for him as a player," Uthappa remarked during a virtual session with select journalists organised by Sony Sports Network. "Sanju's one-day stats are impressive. With shifts in the leadership group, things might take some time to stabilise. We, as fans and supporters of the Indian cricket team, should allow that process to unfold."
Uthappa believes that Samson is not entirely out of the running for a spot on the ODI team. He stressed that Samson must capitalise on future opportunities with strong performances to secure his position.
"I don't think Sanju is out of contention, just like any other player. It's just a matter of time before he gets his chance. When those opportunities arise, he needs to excel in order to remain in consideration," Uthappa explained.
Samson is included in India’s T20I squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. A standout showing in the T20 format may prompt selectors to rethink his place in the ODI lineup as well.
