Jaiswal Receives Key Support to Tackle Pace Struggles
The upcoming Test series against Bangladesh holds significant importance for Yashasvi Jaiswal, as well as for Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, who are each looking to solidify their positions in India's Test lineup. While Gill focuses on improving his defence against spin and Rahul aims to cement his spot in the side, Jaiswal is working through challenges against pace bowling.
During a training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Jaiswal found himself in a difficult position when Jasprit Bumrah knocked over his stumps, with the young left-hander struggling against both pace and movement. Virat Kohli, observing the situation, took a moment to advise Jaiswal, offering tips on leaving deliveries and choosing the right moments to shoulder arms. Despite Kohli's insights, Jaiswal continued to face difficulties at the crease.
Sensing the need for further guidance, head coach Gautam Gambhir stepped in to offer Jaiswal an extended net session. For 15-20 minutes, Jaiswal focused on getting behind the line of the ball during throwdowns. Though Jaiswal had delivered an impressive performance in his previous Test series against England, where he scored 712 runs, he appeared rusty, likely due to inconsistent form during the IPL, where he managed only one fifty and one century before being sidelined at the T20 World Cup.
The fast bowlers continued to trouble Jaiswal, with Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and net bowler Yudhvir Singh testing his technique. While he handled the spinners with ease, concerns about his struggles against pace led Gambhir to provide additional attention. Despite the challenges, India remains optimistic about Jaiswal’s potential as a key player for the upcoming 10-Test season, particularly as they prepare to face bowlers like Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.
As India looks ahead to their home Test season and the subsequent series in Australia, both Shubman Gill and KL Rahul will also be under scrutiny. Gill, having fought to retain his spot in the Test lineup, turned his fortunes around with a crucial century in the second innings against England and consistent performances in the following Tests. However, questions linger about his ability to handle the No. 3 spot, especially with his vulnerability to in-swingers and spinners. Gill has acknowledged the need to improve his defence on turning tracks and has been working on this since the Duleep Trophy.
KL Rahul, who is likely to bat at No. 5 or 6, has shown glimpses of his potential with centuries in England and Australia but has yet to fully secure his place in the Test side. His recent net sessions at Chepauk have displayed confident footwork and a solid defence, offering hope that he can provide much-needed stability for India as they prepare for the upcoming series.
