Keshav Maharaj Ruled Out of ODIs Against Pakistan
South Africa's dependable spinner, Keshav Maharaj, has been sidelined for the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against Pakistan. Maharaj, who was initially set to play in the series opener on December 17, sustained an injury during the pre-match warm-up and was unable to take the field. Following a medical evaluation, scans confirmed a left abductor strain, rendering him unavailable for the second and third ODIs scheduled for December 19 and 22. In his absence, Bjorn Fortuin has been called up as a replacement for the remaining matches.
Interestingly, this news follows the announcement of Maharaj's inclusion in South Africa's Test squad, despite his injury, for two crucial home matches. These Tests are vital as South Africa leads the World Test Championship standings for the 2023-25 cycle, with a win percentage of 63.33. Securing victories in these games would significantly bolster their chances of reaching next year’s final.
In a statement released by Cricket South Africa (CSA), it was confirmed that Maharaj will return to Durban to begin his rehabilitation. His fitness will be reassessed ahead of the first Test, set to commence on December 26 in Centurion, allowing the team to determine his availability for this important fixture.
As South Africa balances short-term challenges in the ODI series with long-term Test ambitions, all eyes remain on Maharaj’s recovery and the impact his return could have on their campaign.
