Lions have been crowned champions of the 4-Day Series
The Central Gauteng Lions lifted the 4-Day Domestic Series trophy at the Wanderers on Sunday. They did so after a remarkable comeback against Western Province.
Despite being 35-5 in their first innings of the five-day final, the Lions managed to score 225 runs. They then bowled WP out for 312 after the visitors had reached 286-5.
In their second innings, the Lions were reduced to 113-6 and led by only 26 runs. But the man of the match Delano Potgieter, who made 81 in the first innings, struck an unbeaten 155* to help the hosts chase down 394.
This set WP a challenging target of 308 to win.
Although they made a good start by putting on 55 for the opening wicket, they lost three wickets in quick succession.
On Sunday, WP resumed their run chase at 99-3. During an extended first session, they lost three wickets, including overnight batsmen Kyle Verreynne (40) and Tony de Zorzi (55), who were trapped lbw by pace bowler Codi Yusuf and spinner Bjorn Fortuin, respectively.
Province's hopes were dashed when Daniel Smith (52) fell lbw to Fortuin shortly after lunch. They were all out for 208, giving the Lions a 99-run victory.
Fortuin ended the day taking figures of 5-69 from 26 overs.
