Lungi Ngidi Ruled Out of Upcoming Test Series
South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi will miss the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and the all-format tour against Pakistan due to a groin injury. Ngidi, sidelined since the recent ODI series against Ireland, underwent scans as part of his conditioning routine, revealing bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy. He will begin a rehab program, aiming to return to action in January.
South African captain Temba Bavuma is also uncertain for the first Test against Sri Lanka, recovering from a left elbow injury sustained while diving for a run against Ireland. He has been absent from competitive cricket since that ODI and will undergo a fitness test on November 18. If unavailable, Bavuma’s spot may be taken by Ryan Rickelton, who featured in South Africa’s Test series win over Bangladesh with modest performances.
In Bavuma’s absence, Aiden Markram would likely assume captaincy, though his recent form has been underwhelming, with only one fifty in his last seven Test innings and limited success in recent T20 matches.
South Africa aims to secure their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, needing a strong showing at home to stay in contention. Winning all four home Tests would ensure a spot at Lord’s, but three wins with favourable results elsewhere could also see them through.
