Maphaka is enthusiastic about participating in the SA20

Recently-capped Proteas fast bowler Kwena Maphaka is enthusiastic about finally participating in the SA20 tournament. The 2025 edition of the tournament was launched in Johannesburg on Monday, with the fixtures officially released.

Maphaka, who missed this year's SA20 due to his involvement in the U19 World Cup—where he was named Player of the Tournament—will represent the Paarl Royals in the upcoming season. He is eager to embrace the challenge.

"I was born and raised in Joburg, so I'm quite familiar with the Highveld conditions, but the rest of the venues will be new territory for me," Maphaka explained. "That's where the experienced players come in, offering guidance, helping you stay calm, and advising on strategies. Their input will be crucial for my growth and will give the team the best chance to perform."

The 18-year-old enters his debut SA20 season already recognized on the international stage, having made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians earlier this year. Maphaka believes that the SA20 is the perfect platform for his continued development.

"Playing T20 cricket at the highest level—whether in the IPL, domestic cricket, or with the Proteas—provides valuable experience that will undoubtedly make me a better player," he said. "Facing the best players in the world presents a significant challenge, and it's a great opportunity to test myself, understand my game better, and grow as a player. I’m hopeful that the SA20 will be a fantastic learning experience for me."

The Paarl Royals will kick off their 2025 season with a home match against the back-to-back champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, at Boland Park on January 11.
