Markram is leading the Proteas in Wednesday’s ODI

Aiden Markram is set to lead the Proteas in Wednesday’s ODI against Afghanistan, stepping in for regular captain Temba Bavuma who is sidelined due to illness.

Currently in the United Arab Emirates, the Proteas are preparing for a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, followed by a two-match T20I and three-match ODI series against Ireland.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Markram expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the upcoming matches and future competitions, particularly as they gear up for next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

“We’re at a stage where we’re continuously developing as a team,” Markram stated. “We’re allowing new players to compete at a higher level, which is fantastic. The atmosphere within the team is positive, and everyone is eager for the challenges ahead—not just this ODI series, but also the one against Ireland coming up. It’s an exciting time for us as we focus on one-day cricket and prepare for the Champions Trophy next year."

“While we aim to nurture the squad and its players, our immediate goal remains to secure victories against formidable opponents in their home territory. We recognize the significant challenge that lies ahead.”
