Markram "We never give up”

The West Indies clinched a series win against South Africa after the Proteas crumbled from a commanding position to lose by 30 runs in their T20 international on Sunday. The victory gave the Caribbean side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

After posting a competitive 179/3, the West Indies seemed to be under pressure as South Africa looked on course for a win, cruising at 129/3 with over six overs left. However, the Proteas then collapsed, losing their last seven wickets for just 20 runs in 35 balls, eventually being bowled out for 149.

Reeza Hendricks provided a positive start to the chase, scoring 44 off 18 balls, but the West Indian seamers stole the spotlight at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium. Romario Shepherd took 3/15 from his four overs, including the crucial dismissals of Hendricks and South African captain Aiden Markram (19). Shamar Joseph also impressed, claiming 3/31 and dismantling the lower order.

Earlier, Shai Hope laid the foundation for the hosts with a brisk 41 from 22 balls, while captain Rovman Powell (35) and Sherfane Rutherford (29) ensured a solid finish in the death overs.

Powell expressed satisfaction with his team’s ability to turn the game around after South Africa’s strong start. “We applied pressure after the powerplay. Wickets brought us back into the game. T20 cricket can change very fast,” he said.

Markram, reflecting on the defeat, noted that his young and experimental side would take valuable lessons from the experience and look to bounce back in the final game on Tuesday. “It’s tough to pinpoint the learnings right now, but one thing is certain: we never give up,” he stated.
