Match-winning spell from Boult hits Brevis

Trent Boult took 3-22 - including the wicket of Dewald Brevis - to lead Rajasthan Royals to a six-wicket IPL victory over winless Mumbai Indians on Monday.

Boult's sensational spell of left-arm pace helped restrict hosts Mumbai to 125-9. Rajasthan overcame the deficit with 27 balls to spare for their third win in three matches this season.

Five-time champions Mumbai, who named Hardik Pandya as captain in place of veteran Rohit Sharma, suffered a third defeat to remain bottom of the 10-team table.

Pandya had another night to remember after being booed by the home fans at the toss, prompting host Sanjay Manjrekar to tell him to "behave".

Pandya top-scored for Mumbai with 34, but admitted that his wicket was the difference between victory and defeat:

“I wanted to counter, we were in a decent position to get us around 150-160. But my wicket allowed them to get back more into the game, I needed to do a lot more.”

Rajasthan's in-form opener Riyan Parag smashed an unbeaten 54 off 39 balls, his second consecutive fifty, with two sixes and a four to steer his side to victory.

But Rajasthan's bowlers reigned supreme as Boult's lethal opening spell gave way to Yuzvendra Chahal's 3-11 with his leg-spin.

Boult claimed three wickets, including Rohit, in the space of four deliveries in his first two overs to silence the home crowd at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit, Naman Dhir, and Brevis were all out for first-ball ducks, and another wicket, that of left-arm quick Nandre Burger, saw Mumbai slip to 20-4 in four overs.

Boult had Rohit caught behind off the fifth ball of his opening over and then trapped Dhir lbw before avoiding a hat-trick in the next over, but the Kiwi sent Brevis back soon after.

Brevis was sent in as a replacement for Dhir, but the move failed.

Burger had the left-handed Ishan Kishan caught behind with a nasty seaming delivery as the bowler leapt into the air in celebration.

Left-hander Tilak Varma and Pandya counter-attacked in their 56-run stand as the left-right duo brought up their fifty in 32 balls.

Chahal broke the stand when he drove Pandya for a big pull, only to be caught in the deep by substitute Rovman Powell as Mumbai lost their fifth wicket for 76.

Tim David made 17 as Mumbai managed to complete their 20 overs.
