Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as England's white-ball head coach after the team's failure to defend their titles in both limited-overs World Cups. Despite the setback, Jos Buttler will continue as captain, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick stepping in as interim head coach for the upcoming series against Australia in September.
The Australian-born Mott, aged 50, took on the role in 2022 when England decided to separate the head coach duties. Later that year, he led the team to victory at the T20 World Cup held in his native country. However, England struggled in the subsequent 50-over World Cup in India, winning only three out of nine matches after previously being champions in 2019.
Their T20 title defence also fell short in the Caribbean and the United States, where they were defeated by eventual champions India in the semi-finals. A semifinal finish was considered the minimum for Mott to retain his position, yet England managed just one win against other Test-playing nations.
Following the T20 World Cup, England's managing director, Rob Key, did not guarantee the continuation of Mott or Buttler in their roles. After reviewing the tournament and discussions with both Mott and Buttler, it was decided that Buttler would remain as captain, while Mott would depart, ending his tenure two years into a four-year contract.
England will now search for a new head coach to prepare the team for the next major event, the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, scheduled for early next year.
