McCullum is the new coach for England limited-overs

Ben Stokes has expressed his admiration for the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) choice to name Brendon McCullum as the new coach for the limited-overs teams, labelling it an "impressive move." Stokes highlighted that McCullum's extensive experience and influence could significantly aid the new generation of players in the white-ball formats as they integrate into the team.

McCullum, who has been leading England's Test team since May 2022, will assume the dual role starting in 2025 under a three-year contract that extends until the end of 2027. Since taking the reins of the Test squad, he has instilled a positive cultural shift, achieving 19 victories in 28 matches and securing six series wins.

In contrast, the limited-overs teams have struggled following the departures of key figures from the 2019 and 2022 World Cup-winning groups. After disappointing outcomes in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Matthew Mott resigned, prompting McCullum's new appointment.

Stokes is confident that McCullum's approach, which champions a fun and liberated style of play, will resonate with the current players. He believes this philosophy has the potential to revitalise the team's spirit and performance as fresh talent emerges. Additionally, Stokes noted that limited-overs captain Jos Buttler will benefit greatly from McCullum’s guidance.

On a personal front, Stokes is currently in recovery from a hamstring injury he sustained during the Hundred competition. He is focused on being fit for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan but is taking a cautious approach to his rehabilitation to prevent setbacks. He acknowledged the complexities of hamstring injuries and the need for patience, emphasising the importance of careful recovery.

Overall, Stokes remains optimistic about the future of England's cricket teams under McCullum and his own return to the field.
