Mohammed Shami is nearing full recovery from the ankle injury

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is nearing full recovery from the ankle injury that has kept him out since the ODI World Cup last November. He is expected to be fit for India's home season, which begins with a Test series against Bangladesh in September.

Shami is in the final stages of rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, having recently resumed bowling without pain. The selectors are considering whether he should play in the Duleep Trophy matches starting September 5 to test his fitness.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has noted Shami's progress and aims for him to be ready for the first Test against Bangladesh on September 19. Even if Shami misses some of the home Tests, he has time to regain full match fitness before the tour of Australia, starting after the third Test against New Zealand on November 5.

Shami, who was pivotal in India's ODI World Cup campaign with 24 wickets in seven games, had been initially included in the squad for South Africa but was later withdrawn due to the injury. He missed the IPL 2024 and the England Test series while undergoing surgery.
