Morkel has got the role of bowling coach

Morne Morkel, at 39 years old, has taken on the significant role of bowling coach for the Indian cricket team, succeeding notable figures like Bharat Arun and Paras Mhambrey. As the first overseas coach since Duncan Fletcher, Morne is under considerable pressure from fans and cricket analysts, tasked with meeting high expectations.

Albie Morkel, Morne's elder brother, expresses his belief in Morne’s capability to handle this challenge. He acknowledges that the position requires precision, with little room for mistakes. India's bowling attack has recently been a standout aspect of the team, consistently achieving 20 wickets per match. Morne’s responsibility will be to both maintain this standard and develop the upcoming generation of fast bowlers, a vital focus for the future.

With accomplished bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh currently in the lineup, a pertinent question is who will step up in the future. Albie highlights the importance of Morne building trust and effective communication with the bowlers, especially as he adapts to a new environment. While Morne has some familiarity with Indian players from his time with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, fostering a strong relationship with key players like Bumrah will be essential.

“That’s a massive responsibility—arguably the most significant coaching position available. The passion for the game and the team's past successes create an environment where mistakes can’t be made. He’ll be working with talented athletes who have accomplished a lot, so it’s vital for him to earn their trust and demonstrate that he can help them reach their peak performance,” Albie stated in an interview with Midday.

Jasprit Bumrah, often hailed as the foremost fast bowler in all formats globally, will be pivotal in Morne’s coaching endeavour. Albie admits uncertainty regarding Morne's views on Bumrah but acknowledges him as a remarkable talent. "I’m not quite sure which Indian bowlers he holds in the highest regard, but it’s evident that Jasprit is an extraordinary player, and I believe Morne would relish the chance to work with him," Albie remarked.

Although Morne’s coaching experience isn’t as extensive as that of his predecessors, he brings valuable insights from his previous roles. He recently served as Pakistan's bowling coach before stepping down following their disappointing performance at the 2023 World Cup, and he has also contributed to New Zealand's coaching during the 2023 T20 World Cup, as well as Namibia's participation in the T20 event. Albie believes Morne's strength lies in enhancing bowlers' mental resilience—an essential quality for navigating challenges like injuries.

"It’s a fine line—balancing technical knowledge with intuitive understanding. The game has changed drastically over the past decade. Young bowlers or those facing injuries often require more technical support before honing their skills. The mental aspect is crucial for sustaining long-term performance," Albie elaborated.
