MS Dhoni's Future with CSK Remains Uncertain
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, are gearing up for the IPL 2025 player auction amidst uncertainty regarding MS Dhoni's future with the team. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is nearing the finalisation of the retention rules, CSK is awaiting clarity from Dhoni, who has yet to confirm his participation in the next IPL season.
Currently, in the United States, Dhoni has neither committed to playing in IPL 2025 nor ruled out the possibility. According to sources within the franchise, his decision will significantly influence CSK's retention strategy. "We are still waiting for his response. Once the BCCI announces the official retention rules, we will have a clearer picture," said a CSK insider.
If Dhoni decides to play, he is likely to be among the five players retained by the franchise, possibly settling for the lowest pay category under the upcoming retention rules. Notably, discussions during a meeting on August 1 between IPL team owners and the IPL Governing Council suggested a potential rule allowing franchises to retain players who retired from international cricket five years ago in the uncapped category. However, a final decision on this is still pending.
Dhoni's future has been a focal point of speculation since CSK's early exit from IPL 2024. At 43, he played the entire season despite a leg injury, having handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the tournament. Although he primarily batted in the final overs, scoring 161 runs in 11 innings, Dhoni achieved a career-best strike rate of 220.55. With the captaincy transition already made, the franchise is prepared for both possible outcomes regarding his future.
Regardless of Dhoni’s decision, CSK is actively searching for a wicketkeeper who can seamlessly integrate into their playing XI and adapt to the conditions at Chepauk. The franchise has also indicated its intention to retain key players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who has reportedly reached an agreement after being signed at a base price of ₹20 lakh.
As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, Dhoni’s decision will be a crucial factor in shaping CSK’s retention and auction strategy.
