Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 102 to lead Mumbai Indians to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Monday.
Chasing 174 for victory, Mumbai slipped to 31-3 before Suryakumar shared an unbeaten stand of 143 with Tilak Varma to reach the target with 16 balls to spare at their home Wankhede Stadium.
Suryakumar hit the winning six, which was also his second IPL ton off 51 balls, a welcome sign for India ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June.
However, the victory for five-time champions Mumbai, who are ninth in the 10-team table, may have come too late in a tournament that is fast approaching its business end.
Pat Cummins' Hyderabad remains fourth, but a fifth defeat and a big one could damage their play-off chances.
Hyderabad needs to win two of their remaining three matches to make the playoffs as they remain locked on 12 points with Chennai Super Kings in third and Lucknow Super Giants in fifth.
The top four teams will advance to the play-offs with the final to be held in Chennai on 26 May.
Former champions Hyderabad posted 173-8 on the back of Travis Head's 48 and an unbeaten 17-ball 35 from lower-order batsman Cummins after being asked to bat first.
The left-handed Head's 30-ball knock gave the team a brisk start before he was dismissed in the 11th over and Hyderabad lost their way with regular wickets, including Heinrich Klaasen for two.
Captain Hardik Pandya and spinner Piyush Chawla took three wickets apiece to rattle the middle and lower order as Hyderabad slipped to 136-8 in their 17th over.
But No 9 Cummins had other ideas as the Australian Test and ODI captain struck back in the final three overs to share an unbeaten 37 off 19 balls with Sanvir Singh.
The batting effort inspired the team and the fast bowlers came into their own to reduce Mumbai to 31-3, including the key wicket of Rohit Sharma, caught behind for four off Cummins.
Suryakumar soon took charge with his attacking batting, reaching his 50 off 30 balls and hammering the opposition bowling with 12 fours and six sixes.
Left-handed Varma made 37 and enjoyed Suryakumar's blitz at the other end.
