Nottinghamshire have signed South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne on a short-term contract for the final stretch of their red-ball campaign.
Currently, in a relegation battle, Notts sit eighth in County Championship Division One, just one point above the drop zone. Verreynne, 27, who has scored one century in his 18 Test appearances for South Africa, is set to play in three of their last four matches, beginning with Thursday's game against league leaders Surrey at Trent Bridge.
Verreynne boasts an impressive first-class average of 48.91, with nine centuries and 32 fifties in 124 innings.
He joins Notts fresh off South Africa’s 1-0 Test series victory in the West Indies, where he played a key role by scoring a match-winning 59 in the second innings of their 40-run win in Guyana.
Notts will, however, be without their pace bowler, Dane Paterson, who is on paternity leave and will miss the Surrey game. Paterson, who was also part of the South Africa squad, is expected to return for the match against Essex starting on 9 September.
Nottinghamshire's remaining fixtures include crucial encounters against fellow relegation contenders—away to Kent (17-20 September) and a home game against Warwickshire (26-29 September).
"It’s great to add someone of Kyle’s experience and quality with the bat to our squad at such a critical point in the season," said Notts head coach Peter Moores. "His record speaks for itself. With him coming straight off a Test series, we’ll benefit from a player who is match-ready in many aspects. I’m sure Kyle will appreciate having a familiar face in the dressing room when Dane returns.
"We’re, of course, thrilled about Dane’s news, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the squad ahead of the Essex game to strengthen our bowling options."
