Indian captain Rohit Sharma declared the team's second innings against Bangladesh while KL Rahul was on 22 runs off 19 balls. India had posted an impressive total of 287 runs, bolstered by superb centuries from Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, leading to a dominant 515-run advantage by the end of Day 3 in the third Test match. At the time of the declaration, Gill was on 119 runs, while Rahul had 22.
Some fans expressed disappointment, suggesting Rohit should have given Rahul more time in the middle, especially considering his recent struggles. However, Rishabh Pant later revealed that Rohit had communicated his intention to declare one hour prior, during a conversation with Pant and Gill at the crease.
"When we came back from lunch, there were discussions about the innings declaration. Rohit bhai mentioned, ‘We’ll see if we can play for one more hour; anyone who wants to score can go for it.’ So, I approached the game intending to score quickly, thinking I might even reach 150," Pant shared.
This context clarified that Rohit’s timing for the declaration was premeditated and not a judgment based on the players currently batting.
Post-match, Rohit Sharma lauded Rishabh Pant's remarkable return to Test cricket following a break of over 600 days. "He has faced considerable challenges, and it has been impressive to see him handle those tough moments. His comeback during the IPL, along with a successful World Cup, highlighted his affinity for this format," Rohit commented.
He stressed that the focus was never on how Pant would perform at the crease, but rather on ensuring he had the chance to play. Rohit also praised Pant for competing in the Duleep Trophy in preparation for this Test match and making an immediate impact during the game.
