Recent T20 internationals saw several players penalised for violating the ICC code of conduct, highlighting the importance of maintaining discipline on the field. Here’s a breakdown of the incidents that led to fines and demerit points for three players across two matches.
Gerald Coetzee Penalised in South Africa-India Clash
South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee faced a 50% deduction in his match fee and received a demerit point during the fourth T20I against India in Johannesburg. The incident occurred in the 15th over of India’s innings, when Coetzee voiced his displeasure after a wide call by the umpire. His response, deemed inappropriate, resulted in an official reprimand. Coetzee acknowledged his mistake and accepted the penalty without contest. India had already secured the series with a 3-1 victory.
Scott Edwards Sanctioned for Equipment Abuse
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards was penalised during the third T20I against Oman in Al Amerat. Found guilty of breaching Articles 2.8 and 2.2 of the ICC code of conduct, which addresses the abuse of equipment and fixtures, Edwards’ actions drew attention.
Following an lbw dismissal, Edwards displayed his bat to the umpire in protest. His frustration continued as he threw his bat and gloves onto the field while returning to the dugout. These actions earned him two demerit points and a fine amounting to 10% of his match fee.
Sufyan Mehmood’s Send-Off Costs Him
Oman’s seamer Sufyan Mehmood was also penalised in the same match for giving a send-off to Netherlands batter Teja Nidamanuru. Mehmood was fined 10% of his match fee and handed one demerit point.
Both Edwards and Mehmood admitted to their infractions and accepted the penalties recommended by match referee Neeyamur Rashid, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
Despite the disciplinary actions, the Netherlands emerged victorious, sealing the series 2-1.
