Proteas have chosen a young squad for T20I

The Proteas have chosen a young and relatively inexperienced squad for their T20I series against hosts West Indies, starting Friday. South Africa's captain, Aiden Markram, revealed that this decision was strategic, as they are already focusing on preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Despite their defeat to India in the T20 World Cup final this past June, the Proteas are clearly setting their sights on the next edition, which is less than two years away.

In the first T20 in Tarouba, which starts at 9 PM SA time, the Proteas have opted to rest several of their seasoned players, including Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi.

As a result, emerging talents like 18-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka and top-order batter Jason Smit could get their opportunity.

"While 18 months may seem like a lot of time, in cricket, it flies by," said Markram. "It’s great that we’re beginning this journey now, rather than waiting until three or four months before the World Cup. We want to get players fully committed to representing this T20 side. Hopefully, our recent World Cup run inspired some of these guys."

Markram expressed his excitement about seeing the new players step up at the international level.

"It’s exciting to have Kwena and Jason in the squad. It’s been a remarkable year for Kwena, and he’s brought plenty of energy to the camp, as we saw in training yesterday. Jason’s path has been different, but he’s worked hard at every level to earn his place here.

"Their journeys may be different, but we’re eager to see how they perform. And it’s not just them—there are several fresh faces in the squad," added Markram.
