Proteas Prefer to Prepare at home

South Africa’s cricket team has decided to skip a warm-up match in Bangladesh, opting instead for a three-day training camp in Tshwane. This calculated move comes as the Proteas prepare for a challenging two-Test series in Bangladesh, despite not playing in the subcontinent for three years. The Proteas management, led by Test coach Shukri Conrad, believes they gain more from controlled home conditions than from facing a local Invitation XI in Dhaka.

Conrad emphasised the value of customising practice surfaces to suit their preparation needs. "In a warm-up game, you rarely face the same conditions as in a Test match. Here, we’ve created surfaces to help with both seam and spin preparation,” Conrad said. Stand-in captain Aiden Markram echoed these sentiments, saying the camp has offered ample practice, especially in spin-heavy conditions.

While Temba Bavuma, who last played in Bangladesh in 2015, will miss at least the first Test, Markram will lead the side as they tackle Bangladesh's spin-heavy bowling attack. Conrad also noted the emotional aspect of the series, as Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to retire after the series, likely motivating the hosts further.

The Proteas have a strong Test record against Bangladesh, but Conrad acknowledges the significant progress Bangladesh has made in recent years. He expects a tough series but believes it will be a valuable test of character for the South African team. The first Test begins next Monday in Dhaka.
