Temba Bavuma, the captain of the South African cricket team, expressed his joy following the Proteas' 1-0 series win against the West Indies after securing a 40-run victory in the second Test match. The team bounced back from a rain-affected first Test that ended in a draw, showcasing impressive performances at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.
Bavuma highlighted the significance of winning away from home, stating, “We were just saying with the guys, winning away from home is never an easy feat. We should never take it for granted, let alone any Test victory for granted, so it’s very satisfying.” Despite struggling with the bat during this match, he deemed the series victory a major accomplishment, especially with a relatively young and inexperienced squad.
He noted the importance of learning from the experience, indicating that the series win would boost the confidence of the team as they face future challenges. Bavuma praised all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who earned the man-of-the-match award for his contribution of six wickets (4/32 and 2/35) and vital runs towards the end of the innings.
Reflecting on Mulder’s crucial 90-run partnership with Kyle Verreynne, Bavuma remarked, “That was so crucial in us getting that competitive score, so ja, there’s lots of positives we can take.” Overall, Bavuma remains optimistic about the growth and performance of his team as they continue to evolve.
