Proteas Women Face Challenges Heading into Women’s T20 WC

The Proteas Women are heading into the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, starting Thursday in the United Arab Emirates, with significant changes and challenges. In 2023, they came close to winning the trophy on home soil, but narrowly lost to Australia in the final. That moment was seen as a turning point for women’s cricket in South Africa, and expectations were high for continued success.

However, a year later, the team has undergone major transitions. They’ve lost several experienced players, including pace bowler Shabnim Ismail, and are in a rebuilding phase. Additionally, Hilton Moreeng’s tenure as head coach has ended, with Dillon du Preez stepping in as interim coach.

The team will open their World Cup campaign on Friday against the West Indies, featuring a number of young players who have not yet experienced a major ICC event. Despite losing both warm-up matches to New Zealand and India, the Proteas are coming off a 2-1 T20 series victory against Pakistan.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt remains optimistic about the team's preparation, particularly with the addition of new coaching staff members. Batting coach Bakir Abrahams, fielding coach Bongani Ndaba, and former Proteas spinner Paul Adams have all joined the support team, providing additional guidance and structure.

"It’s definitely different now," Wolvaardt acknowledged. "Most players have only ever played under Hilton, but Dillon has been with us for several years, so he knows the direction we’re headed in. It’s also the first time we’ve had an official batting and fielding coach, so everything feels very well-organised."

She added, "It’s been great to have extra hands at training, with specific groups working on different skills. We’re excited about the tournament ahead."
