After an incredibly tense practice session, the Proteas Women’s team is eager to take on Australia in the semi-finals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE. With their eyes on the crucial match between West Indies and England, where all three teams still had a shot at the final four, the squad's fate was revealed during the innings break, as the match transformed into a crucial contest between the other teams.
Ultimately, the West Indies topped the group and advanced to the semi-finals, with South Africa securing second place, setting up a knockout match against reigning champions Australia on Thursday at 4 PM.
"I was really anxious during training, fingers crossed the entire time," said Proteas spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba. "I was hoping we’d at least make it to the semis because we’ve worked so hard and truly deserve this opportunity."
“I’m thrilled with the news. We’ve earned our spot, and I can’t wait for the semi-finals,” she added.
This semi-final marks a rematch of last year’s final, where Australia narrowly defeated South Africa in Cape Town. Mlaba noted she is already mentally preparing for the challenge against the favoured Australians, although, as demonstrated by the Windies’ unexpected victory over England, surprises can occur in cricket.
“I can’t control what will happen, but I knew if we made it to the semis, we’d face Australia. So I had already envisioned that scenario in my mind,” she stated.
Mlaba has been outstanding for the Proteas this tournament, claiming nine wickets so far, including a top performance of 4/29 against the West Indies in their first match. She attributes her success to her teammates’ support, emphasising the collective effort behind their achievements.
“Without this team, none of this would have been possible. They’ve been there throughout, catching balls, backing me up,” Mlaba explained. “We truly rely on each other because we play as a team. My nine wickets are not just my success; they belong to the whole team.”
