Ajinkya Rahane, with his extensive experience in international cricket, including 85 Tests and 90 ODIs, made a notable contribution to Leicestershire's County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan. Rahane scored a superb 102 runs from 192 balls, including 13 fours and a six. His innings was pivotal during a crucial 183-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Australian Peter Handscomb.
Rahane's century, his 40th in First-Class cricket, was vital as Leicestershire fought to avoid defeat. His performance came as the team aimed to salvage a draw after Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram scored a career-best 257 runs without being out at Sofia Gardens.
By the end of the third day, Rahane was unbeaten on 47 and Handscomb was on 33, with Leicestershire at 144 for 3, trailing by 155 runs when bad light stopped play with 21.2 overs remaining. By lunchtime on the final day, Leicestershire had advanced to 271 for 4, requiring just 28 more runs to put Glamorgan back in to bat.
Rahane and Handscomb were aided by two dropped catches from Glamorgan’s leg-spinner Mason Crane, which could have influenced the outcome as Glamorgan had declared at 550 for 9, setting a lead of 299 runs.
When Rahane came to the crease, Leicestershire was in trouble at 74 for 3. He and Handscomb worked to keep the team's hopes alive for a draw. Rahane's effective use of the cut shot, including hitting consecutive fours, helped him achieve his first century for Leicestershire and strengthen the team's position.
Rahane, who has previously scored 12 centuries in Test matches and three in ODIs, had made 42 runs off 67 balls in the first innings before being dismissed by Kiran Carlson.
