Ratra Appointed to the Men's Selection Committee

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed on Tuesday, September 3, that former Indian cricketer Ajay Ratra has joined the men's team selection committee, taking over the role from Salil Ankola. Ratra will begin his new responsibilities ahead of India’s forthcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, which kicks off on September 19. With extensive experience as a wicketkeeper-batter, Ratra is expected to bring valuable insights from both domestic and international cricket contexts.

Having played six Tests and 12 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, Ratra enjoyed a robust first-class career with Haryana, amassing nearly 4,000 runs and making over 240 dismissals. His involvement in cricket extends beyond his playing career; he has served as Head Coach for teams such as Assam, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, and was part of the Indian coaching staff during the ODI series in South Africa in 2023.

In his new role as a selector, Ratra will collaborate with fellow committee members to scout and develop the next generation of Indian cricketers. The BCCI emphasised that Ratra's coaching background and cricket acumen will be crucial in providing promising talents with the platform to thrive at elite levels.

Ratra's cricket journey commenced early when he was part of the Indian Under-19 team that won the Youth World Cup in 2000, later leading the team to success in a home series against England. He made his international debut in 2002 and became the youngest wicketkeeper to score a Test century with an unbeaten 115 against the West Indies in Trinidad.

Despite facing fierce competition from wicketkeepers like Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik, Ratra made notable contributions to Indian cricket through his domestic performances. After retiring in July 2015, he has remained engaged with the sport as a coach and cricket analyst.

Ajay Ratra's career reflects his dedication, hard work, and love for the game. Now, as a member of the selection committee, he is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian cricket.
