Rohit's century was not enough as Chennai defeated Mumbai
Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 105, but his Mumbai Indians fell 20 runs short against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
Despite Rohit's century in 61 balls at his home in Wankhede Stadium, the five-time winners Mumbai finished on 186-6.
Chennai, who won their fifth title last year, were bowled out for 206-4 by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the in-form Shivam Dube.
Gaikwad scored 69 runs and Dube smashed an unbeaten 66 before MS Dhoni hit three successive sixes in the 20th over to take Chennai past 200.
Dhoni came in to bat with only four balls left and scored 20 runs. He smashed Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya for three sixes and finished with a two, ending a 26-run over.
Sri Lanka's quick, Matheesha Pathirana, took four wickets, leading to Mumbai's fourth loss of the season.
The two teams have had contrasting runs after changes in leadership this season. Pandya replaced Rohit as Mumbai's captain, while Dhoni surprisingly handed over the Chennai leadership to Gaikwad.
Gaikwad secured his fourth win as captain after setting the pace for his team with a 40-ball knock, featuring five fours and five sixes.
He scored 90 runs with Dube before being dismissed by Pandya. However, Dube and Dhoni's cameo helped Chennai finish strongly.
Mumbai had a good start with Rohit and Ishan Kishan adding 70 runs for the first wicket before Pathirana struck back.
Pathirana, also known as 'Baby Malinga' for his slinging action similar to former Sri Lankan quick Lasith Malinga, dismissed Kishan and then Suryakumar Yadav, who suffered his second duck this season, in the space of three balls.
Rohit attempted to maintain the momentum in his 63-ball knock, scoring his second IPL ton, while Tilak Varma was dismissed for 31 by Tushar Deshpande.
Pandya was also dismissed by Deshpande, prompting cheers from the home crowd and highlighting Mumbai's captain's growing unpopularity.
