Rookies that attract your attention

The Proteas are set to introduce several fresh faces during their upcoming T20 International series against the West Indies. Coach Rob Walter has included two newcomers, Jason Smith and Kwena Maphaka, while others in the squad have only a handful of T20I appearances for South Africa. Here’s a look at some of these promising players and what they can offer as Walter prepares the team for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India.

Jason Smith

At 30, Jason Smith isn’t your typical rookie, but his career has gained momentum after moving from Western Province to the Dolphins in Durban. The all-rounder showcased his batting prowess in the recent CSA T20 Challenge, scoring 291 runs at an average of 41.57 with a strike rate of 134.10. His performance included a crucial 51 in the final against the Lions. Smith’s experience and form make him a valuable addition to the Proteas.

Kwena Maphaka

Eighteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka has already made a name for himself. The left-arm seamer was a standout at the 2024 ICC U19 World Cup on home soil, where he earned the Player-of-the-Tournament award with 21 wickets at an astonishing average of 9.71. Maphaka has also gained valuable experience playing in the domestic T20 circuit and for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Though his IPL stint was challenging, it has undoubtedly prepared him for the big stage. Maphaka is seen as a key figure in the future of South African cricket.

Nandre Burger

The 29-year-old left-arm quick Nandre Burger is another late bloomer. Known for his ability to swing the ball into right-handers and for his effective bouncer, Burger has started to feature for the Proteas across formats. Although he was on the sidelines during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, he is vying for a regular spot in the squad as the team builds toward the 2026 edition.

Donovan Ferreira

With middle-order stalwarts Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller absent, Donovan Ferreira will be eager to seize his opportunity in the Caribbean. A powerful hitter with a strike rate of 187.50 in his two T20Is for South Africa, Ferreira is known for his ability to finish innings with quick runs. Additionally, his useful off-spin offers the Proteas a versatile option. Ferreira’s extensive franchise experience should help him perform well against the West Indies.

Patrick Kruger

Kimberley-born all-rounder Patrick Kruger has come into his own in recent years, especially in the SA20. He has delivered under pressure with both bat and ball, showcasing his resilience in tough situations. Kruger’s primary strength lies in his ability to clear the boundary from the outset, making him a potent weapon in the lower order. His contributions with the ball on surfaces that offer some assistance also add depth to the Proteas lineup.

These rookies bring a mix of experience, potential, and versatility, making them players to watch as the Proteas chart their path to future success.
