Sammy Takes Charge as West Indies Head Coach

The West Indies have named former T20 World Cup-winning captain Daren Sammy as their head coach for all formats of the game. Sammy, who famously led the team to T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016, had been overseeing the white-ball teams since May 2023. Starting April 2025, he will also take on the role of Test head coach, succeeding Andre Coley.

Under Sammy's guidance, the West Indies have seen significant improvement in their T20 performances, climbing from ninth to fifth in the rankings. During his tenure, the team secured 20 wins out of 35 matches, including notable series victories at home against England, India, and South Africa. The ODI team has also benefited from his leadership, winning four of the seven bilateral series played since he took charge.

Cricket West Indies president, Dr. Kishore Shallow, praised Sammy’s leadership, describing him as a visionary with the dedication and motivational skills to inspire the team. Dr. Shallow called the appointment a bold move aimed at revitalising West Indies cricket and taking it to greater heights.

Sammy’s first Test series as head coach will be against Australia in June. Meanwhile, Andre Coley, who previously led the team to a remarkable Test victory against Australia in Brisbane, will remain in charge of the two-Test tour of Pakistan in January. Coley will aim to improve his record of two wins, two draws, and seven losses before stepping aside for Sammy.

This new chapter marks an exciting era for West Indies cricket, with hopes high for continued progress under Sammy’s leadership.
