Sandhu's Record Surpassed by SL Debutant

Sri Lankan debutant Milan Rathnayake made history on the first day of the opening Test against England in Manchester by breaking a 41-year-old record. Rathnayake scored 72, setting a new benchmark for the highest score by a number 9 batsman in men's Test cricket, surpassing the 71 runs scored by India’s Balwinder Sandhu against Pakistan in Hyderabad back in 1983.

Rathnayake’s knock proved crucial as he combined with Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva in a vital 63-run partnership for the 8th wicket. This stand helped Sri Lanka recover from a dire 113/7, following a relentless pace attack from England, spearheaded by Chris Woakes (3/32) and Gus Atkinson (2/48).

Rathnayake’s gritty 72 from 135 deliveries guided Sri Lanka to a total of 236 before stumps. His innings ended when young spinner Shoaib Bashir struck, luring Rathnayake into an aerial drive that was caught by Woakes at mid-on.

In response, England’s openers Ben Duckett and Daniel Lawrence laid a steady foundation, despite the absence of Zak Crawley. The pair hit three boundaries in just four overs, putting England at 22/0 by the close of play. With Day 2 ahead, England will aim to continue their aggressive 'Bazball' style and build a substantial lead in the match.
