Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt-Hodge Lead England to Victory Over SA

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge guided England to a commanding seven-wicket win against South Africa in their second ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Chasing 124, Sciver-Brunt top-scored with an unbeaten 48 off 36 balls, while Wyatt-Hodge contributed a steady 43 from 43 deliveries. Their partnership anchored England’s pursuit of South Africa’s 124/6, built around Laura Wolvaardt’s 42 off 39 balls.

South Africa, after winning the toss, got off to a cautious start with Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits (13) taking the team to 31 before Brits fell to Linsey Smith. Despite Wolvaardt’s efforts, South Africa struggled to find momentum against England's disciplined bowling. Sarah Glenn (1/18) and Sophie Ecclestone (2/15) picked up key wickets, with Ecclestone’s crucial dismissal of Wolvaardt leaving South Africa at 88/3. Marizanne Kapp’s late 26 helped push the total past 120, but South Africa could only muster 124/6.

In response, England faced early pressure from Kapp (1/17) and Ayabonga Khaka, but Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt-Hodge’s partnership of 64 took England to victory with four balls remaining. Despite Wyatt-Hodge’s dismissal in the 18th over, Sciver-Brunt guided England home, keeping them atop Group B.

South Africa will look to bounce back against Scotland in their next match on Wednesday in Dubai.
