Shah directed full support for former cricketer Gaekwad who is battling blood cancer

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has instructed the board to allocate Rs 1 crore for the cancer treatment of former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad. Gaekwad, currently undergoing treatment for blood cancer at King’s College Hospital in London, received assurances of support from Shah, who personally contacted his family to assess the situation.

"The board stands firmly with Gaekwad’s family during this challenging time and is committed to ensuring Mr Gaekwad’s swift recovery. We will continue to closely monitor his progress and are optimistic about his full recovery," stated the BCCI Apex Council, affirming their support for Gaekwad.

Gaekwad, who represented India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, accumulating over 2000 runs during his 13-year career from 1974 to 1987, has garnered support from former cricketers who advocated for BCCI's assistance. Following the announcement of a Rs 125 crore bonus for India's T20 World Cup victory, former player Sandeep Patil highlighted Gaekwad's urgent need for financial aid.

In addition to his playing career, the 71-year-old Gaekwad has also served as India's head coach in two stints and led the team to a runner-up finish in the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy.
