In anticipation of the upcoming one-off Test match against New Zealand, Afghanistan's captain Hashmatullah Shahidi has expressed confidence in his team's potential to compete against the best teams in the world, provided they receive more exposure to Test cricket. Despite the absence of key player Rashid Khan, who is sidelined due to a back injury, Shahidi believes that their young and talented squad can rise to the challenge.
Afghanistan, who will play at their adopted home ground in India, have come a long way since their initial foray into Test cricket in 2018, where they faced a heavy defeat against India. Shahidi noted that although the team has only won three out of nine Tests, they have gained valuable experience and are eager to prove their mettle against stronger opponents.
"We are a brave team and ready to accept challenges," Shahidi said during a press briefing. He emphasised the need for more opportunities to play Test matches as the team continues to develop. Highlighting the abilities of inexperienced players, including 23-year-old spinner Shams Ur Rahman, Shahidi pointed out that this match would allow new talent to shine.
New Zealand, led by Tim Southee, is starting their South Asia tour with this match against Afghanistan before facing additional Tests in Sri Lanka and India. Although this match doesn't count toward the World Test Championship, the importance of performing well remains high for both teams. Southee acknowledged Afghanistan's progress and warned that they should not be underestimated, recognizing the role that spin bowling will likely play in the conditions.
As both teams prepare, the excitement of playing in India amid challenging weather conditions enhances the anticipation for what promises to be an intriguing contest.
