Shakib Al Hasan’s Return Expected, No Harassment Anticipated
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is confident that Shakib Al Hasan will return to Bangladesh for the upcoming Test series against South Africa next month, despite the country's ongoing political instability. This will be Shakib’s first return to Bangladesh since the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the fall of the Awami League government, with which Shakib had political ties.
Shakib, a veteran all-rounder, was among 147 individuals implicated in a murder case filed in Dhaka following anti-government protests that led to Hasina's resignation. During the political unrest, Shakib was abroad, participating in the Global T20 League in Canada and fulfilling commitments in Pakistan and India.
The interim government has provided assurances that Shakib will not be arrested despite the charges. Asif Nazrul, Bangladesh’s law adviser, expressed optimism that law enforcement would show restraint.
"The chief adviser, law adviser, and sports adviser have made it clear regarding Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladesh government has sent a clear message that no one will be unfairly targeted in these cases. We believe the interim government has made its stance clear on Shakib. Unless there is an injury or selection issue, I see no reason why Shakib Al Hasan won’t play in the home series against South Africa," Nafees said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
BCB officials have echoed that sentiment, noting that unless unforeseen circumstances arise, Shakib is expected to be available for the series. Despite the political controversy, he remains a crucial figure in Bangladesh cricket, and his participation in the South Africa series is eagerly awaited. However, with the political landscape still uncertain, his return could still face legal and political hurdles.
